CAPTURE YOUR REFLECTION (PHOTOGRAPHY)

CAPTURE YOUR REFLECTION (PHOTOGRAPHY)

Assalamualaikum Warahmathulahi Wabarakatuhu

Photography plays a very important role in everyday life. We capture each moment of our life through camera as photographs. There are even so many studies, that have emerged about photography and videography. So, there arises a question whether Photography and Videography is allowed in Islam? Our Prophet restricts CREATION OF ANIMATE OBJECTS as haram.

Narrated by Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu’Anhu) heard Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu’Alayhiwassalam) saying: “ Those who creates animate objects will be punished on the Day of Resurrection; and it will be said to them: `Breathe soul into what you have created’ “ [Sahih Bukhari 1678]. Animate objects means living things like animals, birds and humans which has soul. The word “Creation” mean Carving animate sculptures, Creating a human or animal form through animation and drawing and painting etc. These are prohibited in Islam and the people who engage in these would be punished severely. But that’s not the case with Photography (Capturing your self) and videography. Photography is nothing but REFLECTION OF YOURSELF. ALLAH the Almighty has never prohibited his creations (Mankind) to view their reflection. This proves that Photography is not creating a new picture, it’s just the reflection of yourself (similar to a mirror). And videography is nothing but 24 photographs per sec would create a video. So, both Photography as well as Videography is allowed in Islam.
