ASSLAMUALAIKUM WARAHAMATHULAHI WABARAKATUHU
“Lo! Those who believe, and those who emigrate (to escape persecution) and strive (Jahadu) in the way of Allah, these have hope of Allah’s mercy…” (Quran, 2:218).
WHAT JIHAD IS ? AND WHAT JIHAD IS NOT?
Today, the pious word “JIHAD” is portrayed differently, by the media. This has created a misconception of the word “JIHAD” among Muslims as well as Non-Muslims. Let’s go in depth of the topic and analyse about it.
The word JIHAD is taken as “THE HOLY WAR” but’s its wrong.Really JIHAD means “Striving or Struggling in the way of ALLAH”. There are several meaning for this JIHAD as said by or prophet Muhammad (Sallalahu Wa’Alaihi Wassalam).
There 3 types of JIHAD’S.
1. JIHAD AN-NAFS
2. JIHAD ASH-SHAYTAAN
3. JIHAD AL-KUFFAR
Let’s have a glace on these 3 types to get a clear idea about them.
1. JIHAD AN-NAFS (GREATEST OF JIHAD):
It is the Jihad against one’s own self. That’s is striving against ourselves in way of ALLAH.
This includes :
Striving and struggling to learn the Holy Qura’an and the teaching of Islam (i.e., Hadith etc), without which one cannot live happily here and hereafter.
Struggling and striving to act according to what you have learned.
Striving to call others to ISLAM i.e., engaging in DAWAH. By spreading his knowledge to others. This would bring you closer to ALLAH.
Striving Patiently bearing all the problems coming on your way while doing DAWAH.
IF YOU HAVE DONE ALL THESE FOUR LEVELS. THEN YOUR ARE DOING JIHAD. ALHAMDHULILLAH. YOU WILL BE AMONG THE RABBANIYYIN (i.e., learned men of religion who practice what they know and also preach to others. [see Al `Imran: 79])
ALLAH Most High said: “And whosoever STRIVES (JAAHADA), STRIVES (YUJAAHIDU) only for himself (29:6). “As for those who STRIVE (JAHADU) in Us (the cause of Allah), We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good doers.” (29:69)
Our most beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallahu Wa’Alaihi Wassalam) has said: The mujahid is he who makes jihad against his nafs (ego) for the sake of obeying Allah.
(reference: Ibn Hibban (#1624, 2519),it is also in Tirmidhi, Ahmad, and Tabarani )
Another Hadith Rasullah has said: “Jihad against one’s own self in the Cause of ALLAH is the best Jihad” [at-Tabaraani]
2. JIHAD ASH-SHAYTHAAN ( JIHAD AGAINST SHAYTAAN):
Striving and Struggling against Shaytaan means, defending shaytaan by ignoring his evil whispering. Which causes Doubt, Lust, Disobedience etc, which would lead us to even commit SHIRK. This means, we must have full FAITH in ALLAH and his WORDS.
3. JIHAD AL-KUFFAR (JIHAD AGAINST DIS-BELIEVERS):
This JIHAD means Struggling against DIS-BELIEVERS. It has four main levels.
3.With one’s wealth
4.With one’s SOUL.
JIHAD with one’s SOUL means, fighting physically and that is the least level of JIHAD. But now, JIHAD is considered as TERRORISM. We must understand JIHAD is not attacking a non-muslim country if they don’t follow Islam. When we look close at our Beloved Prophet’s life, he never attacked any other non-muslim countries because they didn’t follow ISLAM or neither did he force anyone to accept ISLAM.
REMEMBER, PROPHET MUHAMMAD (SALLALAHU WA’ALAHI WASSALAM) FOUGHT ALL THE WARS THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE TO DEFEND ISLAM AND MUSLIM.
Now, You must have got a clear idea about JIHAD. Terrorism is not JIHAD. Attacking non-muslim countries is not JIHAD. ALLAH and Rasulallah has never said so.
SO, IF YOU WANT TO DO JIHAD, FIGHT AGAINST YOUR OWN SELF. IT IS THE BEST OF JIHAD.
Some hadiths related to JIHAD:
- The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The example of the Mujahid (who performs Jihad) in the Cause of Allah, and only Allah knows who is truly performing Jihad in His Cause, is the example of he who is both a Saa’im (fasting) and a Qaa’im (standing up in voluntary prayers).” [Al-Bukhari]
- A’isha, Allah be well-pleased with her, asked: ‘Messenger of Allah, we see jihad as the best of deeds, so shouldn’t we join it?’ He replied, ‘But the best jihad is a perfect Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).'” (Sahih Al-Bukhari #2784)
